Athens Alabama is located in the center of Limestone County and is the county seat.   Athens Alabama has a city school system composed of four elementary schools (Julian Newman Elementary, Brookhill Elementary, Athens Elementary, and Cowart Elementary), an intermediate school (Athens Intermediate School), a middle school (Athens Middle School), and a high school (Athens High School).   Athens Alabama is located beside Interstate 65 so it has a growing commercial base including several big box retailers (Wal-Mart, Lowes) and several chain restaurants (Cracker Barrel, Applebee’s, Logan’s, Ruby Tuesday, etc).   The website for the city government is http://www.athensal.us.   The City of Athens Parks and Recreation Department maintains and manages five city parks, the Athens Recreation Center, and the Athens Sportsplex.  The city of Athens Alabama has several very nice subdivisions including Canebrake which is golf and tennis community.   We have provided a page that shows the Athens Alabama Subdivisions.
